We get a snazzy shot of a shirtless Michael (yeah!) summarizing past happenings, in case we didn't catch the previouslies aired a few seconds ago. Then we get a shot of the Great Escapees (minus Linc) in the yard discussing The Next Step. Michael points out a storage building and says it sits directly on top of the main pipe which connects all the buildings. He wants to get in there to dig yet another freakin' hole so Abruzzi needs to come up with a PI excuse to get in there. Abruzzi reminds Michael that building's a restricted area.
And up saunters T-Bag, who's feeling "left out." The others dismiss him and get up to leave (just like in High School). T-Bag reminds them that he Knows. Abruzzi says there's no way he's letting T-Bag in on the Great Escape (and I see his point, after all he is a father with two adorable kidlets at home). Sucre doesn't wanna play with T-Bag either (see-the popular kids don't want T-Bag joining their clique). Michael figures T-Bag'll be "out of the picture soon enough." Hmmm...
Cut to the Pope trying to comfort Rookie Guard's grieving widow. Bellick's there as well and he's looking pretty torn up. GW is looking through Rookie Guard's wallet and says the pic of their daughter is missing. Pope assures her they'll find it and they'll find out who killed her husband. After she leaves, Pope tells Bellick to do anything he deems necessary to find Rookie Guard's killer. Uh-oh, Bellick with unlimited power can't be good.
Veronica's staring off into the distance as Nick unloads a crapload of boxes from the car. Veronica's a little freaked out about the Voice of death, but Nick figures it's just a scare tactic. It means they're on the right track. Uh-huh. Building Super Lucas comes over and offers to help haul the boxes inside. Veronica tells him to leave them outside her apartment door, but he's there and figures he'll just unlock the door with his key. Oh, Lucas, such a nice guy. And Ka-Boom! Lucas, we hardly knew ya.
Back to Fox River, Abruzzi tells Michael they should start a fire in The Next Step Building. He tells Michael a little story about the chapel burning down a few years ago. Since the place was filled with lead paint and asbestos, Fox River couldn't get a contractor (I think they just couldn't find a cheap enough contractor). Anyhoo, they put PI on the job and the inmates worked with little to no supervision for hours at a time because the guards wanted to avoid that toxic crap.
Here comes T-Bag again, along with Cherry Prison Bitch. T-Bag wants to make himself useful so he requests a PI card. Abruzzi tries to dismiss him with "it's on its way," but T-Bag ain't having none of it. He figures the Great Escapees are just stalling until he gets popped for killing Rookie Guard. Michael's and Abruzzi's faces telegraph that, in fact, is exactly what they're hoping for. T-Bag's becoming awfully repetitive as he says once again that he Knows. Michael's going with the whole "if I stare at him long enough, maybe he'll just go away" look. Honestly, he doesn't say a word in this scene. He's not going to get rid of T-Bag that way, the intensity of his staring is much too sexy. Maybe this is what sold Wentworth Miller on the part. Did his agent say, "Dude, I know being a lead (although Dominic Purcell has top-billing, explain to me how that happened) in a tv series is draining, but you'll be doing a bunch of staring. It's not like you'll have way more lines than the supporting actors."
On that note, we head to the remains of Veronica's apartment. Slimeball Kellerman and Dead-Man-Walking Hale survey the wreckage as they chat with Patricia Wettig. She orders them to "move on the second thing." Hale thinks that Linc's bound to get the message now, as we see a body bag being loaded into an ambulance. Patricia snottily reminds them that they've been sure before and their plans are always thwarted. Oh, if only she knew she was on a tv show, it'd be much less frustrating. Kellerman tells his partner he's "thinking too much" and Hale snaps back with "God forbid." Hee.
Back on the inside, Bellick's getting busy with the cell-tossing and he's not being neat about it. Sucre's worried that if their cell is tossed, Bellick will find the back door. He wonders if they should turn T-Bag in, but Michael says if they do that T-Bag will squeal because he Knows.
While on PI, the Great Escapees head inside The NSB. Michael checks out a door with a "No Inmates Beyond This Point" sign so, naturally, he opens it and gets a gun in his face for his trouble. Oops, seems the storage area was converted into a break room after the retrofit.
Sucre's understandably upset, as are the others. Linc then spies Westmoreland leaving The NSB, unescorted. Nice continuity here, by the way--with Linc's neck wound visible--kudos to the make-up department. Linc says Westmoreland's a trustee-an inmate with the highest level of security clearance. And how does one manage that, Michael ponders. Easy, just have a thirty-year clean record. Michael decides they need to bring Westmoreland on board.
So he approaches Westmoreland in the yard and extends an invitation to the Great Escape. Westmoreland figures Michael only wants him because he thinks he's DB Cooper. Michael: "I don't think, I know." He proceeds to tell a rather lengthy and somewhat interesting tale (complete with flashbacks) of how he figured out that Charles Westmoreland is DB Cooper. After the story Westmoreland brings up the little fact that while Cooper was hijacking a plane, he (Westmoreland) was in county lock-up for a D & D (drunk and disorderly-I'm assuming). Poor Michael.
We check in with a bloody Nick and a dazed Veronica. She's quite upset, which is understandable, and wants to go to the cops. Nick insists they need to play dead for awhile.
Back to Sucre and Michael's cell. Sucre's come up with a plan for the fire--it involves rubber cement and a coffee pot. Michael says even if they know how to start the fire, they still need Westmoreland since he's the only one who can get into The NSB. Sucre asks what Westmoreland wants in exchange for helping them out.
Cut to Michael finding kitty Marilyn in the tunnels and then returning her to Westmoreland. Westmoreland asks what Michael wants for this favor and Michael tells him about a coffee pot and his need for a fire. Westmoreland says he can't do it. If and when a parole date ever comes up, he wants a spotless record. He does express genuine gratitude for the return of his cat.
Michael then heads to the Infirmary for his (weekly, daily?) dose of insulin. Doc thanks him for his rescuing, but calls him on his lie about the crawl space. Michael goes all cold on her and just leaves.
Meanwhile, Linc's meeting with a reporter who asks him about the case and blah blah. Long story short: she's not a reporter, she's a Bad Guy and she threatens L.J. "I hope you said goodbye to him when he left this morning." Linc goes nuts and screams at her and the guards have to restrain him.
L.J.'s house. Hale shows up and says he's from Juvenile Court doing a spot check of L.J.'s living environment and blah blah. Lisa and Main Squeeze return home while L.J. asks Hale for some ID (maybe you should've done that before admitting him into your home). Hale pulls his gun just as Lisa enters the house. She freezes, L.J. throws his glass at Hale and both he and his mother Run! Lisa goes back to the kitchen and dials 911 (presumably) and it just rings and rings. They really need to get some more operators. L.J. makes it outside, via a basement window, but is stopped by Devil Spawn Kellerman. L.J.'s holding his cell phone at his side and flips it open. Kellerman doubts he can dial 911 before Kellerman can pop him and to emphasize his point, Kellerman shows L.J. his big gun (not that one). Main Squeeze comes up behind Kellerman, knocks him down with a bat and yells at L.J. to Run! Kellerman rolls over and shoots Main Squeeze. L.J. makes his (barefooted) way to the front porch and finds his mother's bloody body. He makes a gagging sound, as if he's about to cry and throw up at the same time. Then he scoots.
After commercials we pick up with L.J. again. He's freaking out in some alley as his phone rings. It's Evil Incarnate! L.J. says he's going to the cops. "You go right ahead, but since I'm planting your prints on the murder weapon as we speak I doubt they'll believe anything you tell them. (Uh-shouldn't there be two murder weapons, unless Hale just bashed Lisa's head in or something). And my partner, he's planted your shoeprints in your mother's blood. Just come on back, we can help you." Since Kellerman is the cause of L.J.'s current dilemma, he hangs up the phone.
Inside, Bellick's paying a visit to Westmoreland. He figures Westmoreland knows who killed Rookie Guard since the body was found right in front of Westmoreland's cell. Bellick reminds him that he's always treated him fairly then he lays on the guilt. "I've known Bob (RG) since he was eighteen years old. I got him this job." His voice cracks on the last sentence and wow! Did Wade Williams nail that line! He's got me feeling sympathy for Bellick, my God! Westmoreland expresses his condolences, but says he can't risk snitching. So Bellick returns to his true self and gets all menacing with Westmoreland.
As Bellick leaves Westmoreland's cell, Random Inmate warns T-Bag that Westmoreland won't stay silent forever.
We go to Pope informing Linc about the going-ons at L.J.'s. Linc wants to call his son, but Pope says L.J.'s a fugitive and can't allow it. (You can really see the neck wound here).
Westmoreland returns to his cell and finds Marilyn dead as a doornail on his bunk. Poor kitty!
T-Bag checks in with Random Inmate and suggests RI confess to killing Rookie Guard. With T-Bag's history, he'll spend the rest of his life in solitary, but with RI's drug conviction and no violence...Random Inmate wants to know exactly what T-Bag's smoking, 'cuz there's no way he's confessing to offing a guard.
Grieving Westmoreland is cleaning the break room. He goes into Bellick's (unlocked) locker (they really trust him, don't they?) and takes out a cigarette. He sits down to do some serious thinking.
The Great Escapees are busy on PI when Linc tells Michael he needs out and he needs out now! He stomps his foot and sticks out his lower lip too. Oh, he does not. Michael's returned to Denialand (a place he often visits when obstacles land in the middle of his Escape plans) and tells Linc he just has to stick with him. Linc wonders how Michael's going to get around their current problem and Michael doesn't have an answer for him. Maybe he secretly knows he's on a tv show. Of course the hero always triumphs in the end! Anyway, when Michael turns around Linc scuttles off. Seems he's gonna make a break for it. In Broad Daylight. With No Plan Whatsoever. And Absolutely No Stealthy-ness (that's so not a word). Michael tackles his brother and basically calls him an idiot. A guard wakes up and notices the two men on the ground, but is interrupted by a Fire! in the break room.
Michael stops Westmoreland in the yard and thanks him. Westmoreland says simply, "I didn't do it for you."
What's left of the break room is a mess. A fire inspector shows Pope the source of the fire: a cigarette. He asks who smokes that brand and Pope barks, "Bellick!" Hee-Bellick's in Twouble! Then Cherry Prison Bitch shows up and says he knows who done killed Rookie Guard.
So Bellick and several other guards head back to GenPop where Bellick tosses a cell. He finds the pic of Rookie Guard's daughter and shows it to...Random Inmate! The other guards haul RI away. Oh, that T-Bag is one crafty little devil!
After their near-death experience, Nick and Veronica are taking some time off. In an old cabin, in the woods which is, according to Nick, "completely off the grid." We'll see about that.
The Great Escapees are heading to The NSB when T-Bag calls out that he should be included, he really really doesn't want to be left out. He taunts them until Michael relents. So T-Bag becomes a full-fledged member of the Great Escapees. Aww, he gets his own PI jumpsuit and everything. Bellick tells our heroes he wants the break room gutted and it's their only priority. Abruzzi brings up "toxic issues" but Bellick sneers at him to "take it up with the union." Oh, grieving Bellick's gone and the Bellick we all know and loathe is back for good. He warns the boys that they've got the tools inventoried, so nobody get sticky fingers! Once the guards depart Michael tells the others they need to widen the floor drain. He hands out mallets but hesitates at handing one to T-Bag, who makes a joke. Linc snaps at him to "shut up." See T-Bag, you wanted to be a member of the in-crowd, but now you're low man on the totem pole. Anyway, the guys get to whacking (not like that--jeez).
It's nighttime as L.J. checks his phone. Seems he used the cell to snap a photo of Kellerman while he was showing L.J. his gun. Just don't hit "delete."
Our esteemed Secret Service Agents are meeting with Patricia Wettig who requests an update. Kellerman says Veronica's apartment blast was blamed on the gas line and everyone inside was killed. Yeah, all one of them. She then asks about the boy who killed his parents. Is he in custody? Yes, he is, Kellerman Lies. Hale shoots his partner a look at this. Patricia goes on and on about how it's a good thing the boy was caught 'cuz something very bad could've happened if he was still out there. Kellerman just nods. Liar! She then gives a little speech about moving on, putting this behind them blah blah. Then: "You're not just doing this for me, you know. Or my brother." (Huh?) She's interrupted by a knock on the door and another agent saying, "They're ready for you, Madame Vice-President." What? V-P? Evil! She killed her own brother?! Didn't he share his toys when they were kids? Evil! I'm still calling her Patricia, though. As she leaves she tells the agents, "You're doing it for your country." Oh, what a load of bull. She may believe that, but there's no way Kellerman does. He's just doing his job, as long as he gets paid he doesn't care what he has to do. Hale's the one with the conscience and that's why he's doomed. Dooomed!
Lainattua:
Michael: Seventeen days from now, they're going to strap my brother to the electric chair, sending 15,000 volts coursing through his body for a crime he didn't commit. I'm here to make sure that doesn't happen.
Kellerman: You're thinking too much.
Hale: Yeah, God forbid!
Warden Pope (to Bellick): I want the son of a bitch who did this. You do whatever you need to do to find him, you understand?
Dr. Tancredi: Michael, don't be like that. I just want some answers.
Westmoreland: I hope you weren't hanging this whole escape on that money, because I'm not the one in possession of it.
